Sunshine, Steak Sammies & Brendan Lattes
Sydney springs never really start until Father's Day. For the past couple of years, it has been the first real taste of summer after the cooler months and our family has created a tradition or hitting the beach to celebrate all things 'Dad'. The rain, as forecasted, pelted out windscreen as we drove out to Manly but despite my little hope, dad was certain that the sun would come out "because it's Father's Day"
What I am about to say doesn't come out of my mouth a whole lot, but Dad was right! I am writing this post sitting in The Corso with an ice-cream in my hand and my jumper tied around my waist, listening to a young boy busking beneath a flawless blue sky
You can't get a better Father's Day lunch than a good old steak sandwich so we headed to Manly Wharf Hotel. This bustling bistro serves Modern Australian pub-style food and is family-friendly. It is perfectly positioned, overlooking Manly Cove and steps away from the ferry.
Almost every time I eat out with Dad, he doesn't even need to open his mouth for the person behind the counter to know his order. At Nando's it is "Two large chickens, extra hot sauce and sides Of chips and corn tonight Sir?" At Ben Bry Burgers it is "Your usual, two Little Jusos, Two Bali Burgers and two sides of chips?". Most would call that predictable, but dad says it's because he is memorable. The most famous of them all, however, is the "Brendan Latte", a regular, extra-shot, skim milk latte in a take-away cup with his name written on top of it. Barefoot Coffee Traders does hands down, the best coffee in Manly. I was going to go for Dad's favourite but I had to upgrade to an 'Ella Latte', which isn't really a latte at all, it's a mocha because when Belgian Chocolate is on offer I am not going to refuse.
My three younger brothers are never without a rugby ball in hand and dad is always keen to join in on the action. I watch as the four of them dart through the crowds almost tripping people over and knocking people out. Levi alluded to Dad's love for sport in a poem that he wrote for dad on a mug that he gave him as a present that reads "Sporting fan, my loving man. My Dad is like a laugh dispenser. Special hugger, loving lover, bear hugger, food smuggler". Now that... Is going straight to the pool room!
Happy Father' Day Dad! I hope you have had an awesome day. Thanks for always listening, understanding and supporting. Thanks for always making me laugh and being such a great role model. Love you! Xx
