Driving out to Arizona from Los Angeles with a group of friends, I seriously couldn’t help but nag their butts off until they detoured to this colourful man-made mountain in the middle of the desert.
An hour and a half off the road from Palm Springs, in the lower desert of Southern California, this 50 foot mound of magic is the passion project of a local by the name of Leonard Knight. In hundreds of colours, Salvation Mountain expresses one powerful overarching message - God is love.
Built in a time where the church was dull, rigid and religious, this was a way of expressing that life with God is actually vibrant and colourful. It goes against the long list of criteria that was said to be necessary to get into heaven and brought things back to biblical basics - accept Jesus into your heart, repent of your sins, and be saved.
